Our Approach
We work with approved suppliers who meet defined requirements for food safety, traceability and responsible sourcing. This includes:
- Sourcing from fisheries and farms that operate in line with applicable regulations
- Working with suppliers who are independently audited or certified where available
- Ensuring all products can be traced back through the supply chain
Our aim is to provide clear and accurate information so customers can make informed choices.
Seafood: The worldwide context
The marine environment faces a range of complex challenges that make sourcing sustainable seafood increasingly difficult. Overfishing of key stocks, Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, impacts on non-target species and marine ecosystems all place significant pressure on global fisheries.
Similar challenges exist within aquaculture, where environmental impacts, fish welfare, and the sustainability of feed remain key concerns.
Our seafood policy covers both wild-caught and farmed fish products, focusing on the health of fish stocks, impacts on non-target species, and the overall health of marine ecosystems.
Sourcing Standards
Our seafood is sourced in line with established frameworks and recognised industry practices. Where applicable, this may include:
- Certified fisheries or aquaculture operations (e.g. MSC, ASC or equivalent standards)
ü For more information on MSC please check out MSC in the UK | Marine Stewardship Council
ü For more information on ASC please check out asc-aqua.org
ü For more information on Global Gap check out https://globalgap.org/
- National quality assurance schemes such as Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs) which support fisheries working towards recognised sustainability standards
- Supplier-specific standards covering environmental management, animal welfare and stock management
Traceability and Transparency
Traceability is a key part of how we manage seafood sourcing.
For our seafood, we aim to provide:
- Catch or farm origin
- Species information
- Production method (wild caught or farmed)
This information allows us to verify supply chains and supports accurate product labelling.
Supplier Partnerships
We work closely with our suppliers to maintain consistent standards across our seafood range. This includes:
- Regular supplier review and approval processes
- Ongoing monitoring of compliance with our requirements
- Engagement with suppliers on sourcing practices and supply chain controls
We expect all suppliers to meet the same baseline requirements and to provide evidence where required.
Ongoing Review
Seafood sourcing is an evolving area, and we continue to review our approach in line with:
- Changes in legislation and regulatory requirements
- Updates to certification schemes and industry standards
- Developments in best practice for fisheries and aquaculture
Providing Clear Information
We are committed to ensuring that any information we provide about seafood sourcing is:
- Accurate
- Supported by evidence where claims are made
- Clearly explained and not misleading
Seafood sourcing often requires multiple supply bases to help maintain secure supply. As a result, we may source from different countries and catch areas throughout the year, meaning the specific certification can vary throughout the year. Responsible sourcing across all the seafood we sell is an ongoing process. Please see below current certification status of our seafood range; please check back regularly for updates as we continue to progress our responsible sourcing initiatives.
