Start by caramelising the onions. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a non-stick frying pan. Cook the onions for 3 minutes, stirring from time to time so they cook evenly. Then add the sugar and balsamic vinegar and cook for a further 7 to 10 minutes, stirring from time to time.
When the onions are done, heat the second tablespoon of oil in another non-stick frying pan. Cook the garlic for a few minutes and add the steak. Cook the steak according to your taste – well done, medium or rare!
Meanwhile, toast your ciabatta loaves.
Spread the tomato relish or ketchup on the toasted ciabatta loaves. Divide the steak and caramelised onion between the two sandwiches and top with the salad leaves. Serve and enjoy.
