Today on the River Lee the Cork Dragons, a support group for breast cancer survivors and their friends and family, showcased their talents at the start of Breast Cancer Awareness month. Centra stores in Cork city and county have come together to support the cause as they aim to raise enough funds for the Cork Dragons to buy a new boat.

The Cork Dragons was established in 2012 on the premise that exercise after breast cancer is of enormous benefit to improving mental health, boosting energy levels and promoting better sleep. In particular, the movement of paddling a dragon boat helps in reducing the symptoms of lymphedema, a chronic swelling of tissues that can occur after breast cancer surgery.

Centra stores all over the county will be raising money through various initiatives throughout the month including ‘Walk the World’. Ireland’s leading convenience retailer aims to get thousands of people nationwide to collectively walk 47,075km on Saturday 17th October and the proceeds of the 34 Cork walks will go directly to the Cork Dragons. There will be a number of Cork stores also holding their own fundraising initiatives including coffee mornings and a fashion show throughout the month.

Speaking today at the event, Caroline Warren, Cork Dragons member, said; “I joined the Cork Dragons in 2012 following breast cancer treatment and the group has made a massive difference to my life. There are currently 45 members, all from Cork city and county, and we are united together by the experiences we have faced and come through. Battling breast cancer has been a struggle for each and every one of us but through this support group we can show people that you can have a full and healthy life after a cancer diagnosis and that you do not have to fight cancer alone. We have been borrowing a boat from Meitheal Mara so we are so grateful to Centra for their support and we look forward to adding a second boat to our little fleet!”

Also commenting today was Ian Allen, Sales Director of Centra, who added; “It is fantastic to see these men and women out on the dragon boats today, healthy and happy. Centra has supported breast cancer through the Irish Cancer Society for the past five years and we are really looking forward to adding this initiative to our cause this year. Breast cancer has affected so many people around Ireland and we are delighted to be able to support our local community through the Cork Dragons.”

The Lord Mayor of Cork City, Chris O’Leary, said; “I am delighted to be here today to show my support for this initiative as Breast Cancer Awareness month gets underway. I pay tribute to both Centra and the Cork Dragons for what I’m sure will be a successful collaboration and I would encourage the people of Cork to get involved in any way they can over the next few weeks to help raise vital funds for a great cause.”
