Live Well Tips

As part of Live Well, we aim to inform our customers of Live Well tips which can help us to lead a healthier lifestyle all round.  Good nutrition is just part of a balanced, healthy lifestyle – being active is also essential. Centra is heavily involved in GAA at local and national level, supporting activity in our local communities.  Many of our stores run walking clubs and we are active with our Annual Breast Cancer Walk.  Physical activity goes hand in hand with good nutrition for health and Centra has an active role to play in helping our customers and communities moving.  See some of our top tips below:

Hydration – How much?

Aim to have 8-10 200ml glasses of water everyday.  This is between 1 ½ and 2 litres of water everyday.

Start by adding one extra glass of water per day. Once you are used to this, you can add another one and gradually get used to the full 8-10 glasses over a few weeks.

What foods can help to lower cholesterol?

Plant sterols and stanols are a natural substance found in some plants.  They help to reduce the amount of cholesterol that your body absorbs, and this can help to lower blood cholesterol levels.  You need about 2g per day of plant sterols or stanols to get the best benefit.  2g per day can help to lower cholesterol by 7-10%.

Don’t skip meals

Skipping meals or trying to get by on a tiny lunch will just leave you hungry and it can be hard to control what you eat later on if you are ravenous! On the other hand don’t assume that you need a large amount of food.  The best guide is your stomach.  You should aim to be only 80% full at the end of a meal – not stuffed.  This gives your stomach the space it needs to start breaking down your food and it helps you to eat the right amount of food for you.

Where can I find vitamin C?

Vitamin C is mainly found in fruit and vegetables.  Oranges are famous for being rich in vitamin C but kiwis, mangoes, green vegetables and berries are all good sources.

Guidelines for Health

There are a few main areas which we are looking at for our Live Well tips.  We want to outline to our customers how exactly we should be living to remain healthy throughout our life.  What should my BMI be?  Is my cholesterol ok?  How much water should I drink?  How much exercise does it take?...these are all questions which are central to health and living a healthy lifestyle.  With Centra Live Well, we will try to answer these questions.
